Tak Shing and Yin may be envied by their autistic peers as they are being employed. A survey conducted by Heep Hong Society in 2008 shows that only three in ten autistic youth have ever been employed. A lack of understanding of autism and the affected youth’s inability to communicate during interviews are seen as key reasons for the low employment statistic. In light of the survey result, and to create public awareness on the employability of autistic youth, A booklet entitled “A Job Opportunity for Autistic Youth” was published in April to highlight the traits and qualities of autistic people especially their capability on working in order to let the employers have a better understanding of their strengths. Moreover, a self-learning CD equipping the autistic youth on interviewing skill and the requirement of the job market is expected to be released in July.
Joined hands with MSIG, “United for the Future—The Autistic Youth Pre-job training Project” has been launched since 2008. Through which, a series of tailor made pre-job trainings to improve interviewing, socializing, problem solving skills and even the financial management for the youth were held. Upon the completion of the program, participants may have the opportunity to have an internship. To benefit more needy youth, Heep Hong selects some highlights of the pre-job training courses to produce the foresaid booklet and self-learning CD.
Being the graduate of the pre-job training programme, Tak Shing is now working at a fast food restaurant. He found the programme very useful. It empowered him with practical skills such as interview tips, social and communication skills, etc. His mother said that Tak Shing had difficulties in securing a steady job for two years after graduation from high school. Consequently, his confidence and self-esteem were worn away. Yin also gone through the hardships as Tak Shing’s after his graduation. He is now working for Heep Hong as an administrative assistant, and enjoys his job very much. The most important is that he could make use of his potential to serve the community. Both Tak Shing and Yin have a simple dream --- to secure a steady job.
